Subject: FW: LEAD ALERT!: MN child dies from ingestion of a
metallic charm containing lead
Dear Colleagues,
We ask for your attention to several important consumer product
recalls involving dangerous lead hazards in children's jewelry.
Name of Products: Reebok Heart-Shaped Charm Bracelets
Dollar Tree Mood Necklace and Ring
Dollar Tree Glow-in-the Dark Necklace and Ring
Dollar Tree UV Necklace and Ring
The Florida Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program extends it
condolences to the family of a four-year-old Minneapolis child who
died on February 22 of lead poisoning after swallowing a metal Reebok
charm containing very high levels of lead. While this is a very rare
occurrence it is important that this message is shared with families
in order to protect other children. According to the Minnesota
Department of Health, laboratory testing shows that the heart shaped
charm contained 99 percent lead. A similar Reebok heart-shaped charm
tested by the Minneapolis Department of Regulatory Services contained
67 percent lead. The following links will connect you to the
statements from the Minnesota Department of Health regarding this
case: www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/lead/topics/braceletrecall.html
. www.health.state.mn.us/news/pressrel/lead032306.html . The Consumer
Product Safety Commission allows no more than 0.06 percent lead in
jewelry sold in the United States.
The manufacturer, Reebok, is recalling 300,000 of these charms. The
Consumer Product Safety Commission has released the following recall
with color pictures of the product:=20

also been released:=20

A separate but similar recall was issued by the CPSC on Thursday. The
recalled Dollar Tree mood rings and necklaces contain high levels of
lead, posing a serious risk of lead poisoning and adverse health
effects to young children. Pictures and additional information on this
recall can be found the CPSC website:=20

We appreciate your attention to these recalls and ask that you please
share the following messages with community partners to help them
advise parents and caretakers of the potential danger these products
can pose to children:
1. Parents and caregivers should not allow their children to mouth
metal jewelry and other metal objects.
2. Small inexpensive jewelry may contain high lead content.
Please feel free to call or e-mail me with any questions you my have.
My sincere thanks,
Julie Kurlfink
