Hi Karen,
   Thanks to you and many others on this list who have welcomed me so
warmly.
    No, he does not really have a communication system, and I recognize that
he yelling out and even the hitting is a form of communication for him.
However, is seems he wants to say "no" to everything I say to him, whether
it be "good morning", "its time to get lunch" or "what a good job you did".
In fact his whole attitude is one of "go away and leave me alone" :)
(something I can sympathize with at times, lol)

When I say I am taking him out of the room, it is not to outside, sadly to
say.  It is into the rest of the school.  He has already hit another teacher
and a couple of students outside of my classroom.  I will however, talk to
him mom about sunglasses for outside since we will be starting community
based instruction this week.

Is there any type of communication device you or others have had good luck
with?  He has an 8 button cheap talk, but at this time uses it mainly to
balance a toy car on, something he can do for hours if allowed to.  I have
only had him for about 4 weeks now as he spent a couple weeks in the
hospital lately.
