Hi Lisa,
And welcome to the list. Sorry I have been so slow to welcome you but its a
holiday weekend here and as usual everything that can go
wrong is :-(

I certainly understand where you are coming from regarding your student (and
BTW accolades for taking the initiative to try and find
out more)
The first thing that both the mother and OT in me wants to ask is what sort of
communication system does he have?
How can/does he tell you no, yes etc? Mum says to speak to him like a toddler
and use a sing song voice. Does he have an auditory
processing problem? (singing usually gets around this though as you said is not
as "acceptable" in middle school.) Could/does he use
sign or PECS at all? I notice that he is 11. Could he just be going through an
exacerbation because of adolescence? Most adolescents
like to test the limits (and never stop!!!!!!!)

Can you identify more specifically the triggers for him hitting out? You
mentioned that he does it when you go outside the
classroom. Is this into sunlight? Most children with T-18 are VERY sensitive to
sunlight, some to the point of it being painful.
There are a number of ways to try and handle this but most wear sunglasses when
out doors and some like my Alex are more comfortable
wearing sunglasses indoors if the room is bright and glary.

If you look up, there are no limits.
