Subject: Nicholas Update 4/25


  a.. Nicholas is able to maintain his blood pressure without meds. 
  b.. The doctor doesn't think he has much swelling of the brain because he is 
able to respond and opens his eyes. 
  c.. They are turning down the vent slowly to see if he can breathe on his 
own.  Currently the machine is providing 8 breaths per minute and Nicholas is 
breathing 10-12 on his own (with pressure from the vent). 
  d.. He is currently on Versed for sedation and Fentanyl for pain.  
  e.. They are giving him TPN (which is total parental nutrition) through his 
IV. 
  f.. His chest x-ray was improved overall. 
  g.. Nicholas is opening his eyes more today but is not moving much elsewhere. 
  h.. The music therapist came in and sang him 3 songs with a guitar.  He was 
alert during this. 
  i.. The next big step is to extubate (remove the ventilator) and see if he 
can sustain breathing on his own. Before they attempt to remove the ventilator, 
several steps will determine if Nicholas is ready. 
  j.. 9:30 pm - Nicholas spiked a fever suddenly (101.8) and they are checking 
to find the source.
