Subject: Nicholas Update

Nicholas had a seizure on Sunday at 12:15 pm and he usually recovers after a
few minutes, but this time he struggled to breathe so we took him to the local
ER. They put him on oxygen but also gave him something for pain which reduced
his ability to breathe properly and he had to be intubated. (They did call a
Code Blue) They stabilized him and flew him to the Childrens Hospital of
Illinois in Peoria IL.

At apx. 9:30 pm on Sunday due to his body being acidic from low oxygen plus all
the meds they gave him caused his respiratory numbers to decline rapidly and he
went into pulseless electrical activity and they had to do chest compressions.
PEA (a cardiac insult) is slightly different than cardiac arrest (although they
did call it that). If there was no heart beat they would have used the
paddles, but he had a heart beat but no blood pressure and no pulse, so what
you do is chest compressions to get the blood flowing and to get a pulse. He
was already vented at that time, so he got oxygen right away but needed it to
circulate through the body and the trauma caused some organ shock. Due to the
trauma of that episode, his kidneys and liver took a hit but should recover.

The doctor thinks his heart will recover and we will see if there has been any
brain damage after he is taken off sedation. Nicholas is on a vent and the
machine right now is doing all the work for him, but they will start to slowly
wean him off to see if he can start taking some breaths on his own. Once they
reduce the sedatives we will see how he responds and then they will talk about
extubating him.

So we will have to make some decisions in the next few days as to what we want
to do if he cannot breathe on his own. Since he is still full of fluids, they
are giving him Lasix to reduce the fluids before they will attempt to extubate.

So the next few days will be stressful and we would appreciate prayers for
Nicholas that he will be able to breathe on his own.
