From our perspective--do both! Our daughter Keren (almost a year, T18)
had g-tube/fundo surgery back in May. We went the fundo route in
addition to the g-tube mainly due to her reflux. Fortunately she
wasn't aspirating, but there was the concern that she might, and the
fundo would help eliminate that concern, as well as the severe reflux.
She had her surgery done laproscopically, which is much less invasive,
and as a result, has less of a recovery time. She was out of the
hospital within three days.
I'd say if you haven't discussed it with your doctor, have him explain
the whole procedure to you and the possible ways to do it. Our doc
drew us some basic sketches that made it all make a lot more sense!
The fundo has been a big help, but yes, there are quirks. Recently
Keren's been spitting up again and so we just had a test done to see if
the fundo was still as it should be (they are known to come undone at
times....). What do you know, but the contrast study showed that
everything was as it should be (the fundo was just as the doctor had
originally done it). Our doc has had this happen before, but he did
reassure us that her reflux (as shown on the study) was much less than
it would be without the fundo.
Hope this info helps a bit! I wish it were a 100% success story to
share with you, but I will say it's definitely been an improvement!
