Hello again.
I promise this one won't be so long.but I forgot to mention something.maybe
a couple somethings?
#1 Jayne.you were telling me about how a film can form over the new lens? I
DID ask the doctor about that and he said yes that can and does happen in
some cases but there IS a procedure that can be done while they're doing the
original cataract surgery to prevent it from happening. They open something
back behind the lens and leave it open if I understood correctly (highly
questionable because I wasn't my usual coherent self by then). He said that
he and his partner had to discuss it and weigh the risks against the
benefits. When they do this procedure, it leaves them at "a slightly higher
risk" for retinal detachment. But on the other hand if a film forms over the
lens then it would mean "another big surgery for sure" because they will
not and do not do laser surgery on kids. They put a stitch in as well
because it makes the incision stronger should he manage to rub it. The only
bummer is that they had to use a regular kind of stitch, NOT the kind that
dissolve. And that's because it's Devon and they wanted to take every
precaution to make it as strong as they could and the dissolving stitches
are much weaker.the only bummer is that he will have to go back in and be
put under again in a hospital setting to get the stitch out.could be weeks
or could be months from now.we'll see?
#2 I gave him his first bath this afternoon. I was a little nervous because
he cannot get any water in his eye for a while. So we put a small towel
under his behind and sat him in the empty tub. We used a basin with warm
soapy water and a wash cloth. I took the mitts off and patched his eye and
completely covered it with the tape to try and seal it against water in case
water splashed. Aside from one false start because he was laughing so hard
he tinkled in his nice clean basin of water.it went off without a hitch and
now he doesn't smell like hospital and surgery anymore :o) The adhesive is
still on his face and will be for a while probably.and the "YES" that I had
to write in purple marker next to his eye is still there.just smeared and
dimmer :o)
#3 It's very surprising to me how "normal/everyday" his eye looks. He has
brown eyes by the way.I've never been really sure what color his eyes were
because of the coloboma (cleft in his pupil that makes his pupil really big
and in the lower part of his iris) and because of the cataract. So yesterday
when I was holding his head while Joe had his hands so the doctor could use
that thingy that measures pressure in the eyeball.I got a really good look
in his eyeball and it was clearer than I've ever seen it :o) Only bad thing
was that just before he was done, I started getting cold, clammy, hot and
sweaty all at the same time and my vision started dimming and I came real
close to passing out. Not sure if it was because my neck and back were
hurting really bad by then or if it was the stress of the day catching up to
me? Probably both. OR maybe I'm just a big whimp??? Whatever.I came THIS
CLOSE to hittin' the floor :o(
I think that's all I forgot???? We'll see as the day moves ahead.
But so far so good :o)
