My son reached a point where he wouldn't eat by spoon either, so I put
the food/mush in front of him with a spoon and he ate what he could
with what little coordination he had.   It was a oddest thing I'd
experienced, but he ate much better without my help after crying when
I was feeding him... just wanted to do it himself.

If he can help feed himself, maybe he's just looking for a little
independence, he will eat by spoon?
