About Dave: Dave Hingsburger has spent his entire career working with
people who have developmental disabilities. He believes that it is
important for professionals to maintain contact with those they serve. Dave
earned his B.A. from the University of Victoria and his Master's from the
University of Toronto. Dave credits his direct contact with people who have
disabilities, both socially and professionally, as the primary source of his
training. He is known for his work in dealing with problem behaviors,
developing healthy sexuality in people with disabilities, communication
strategies, and sexual abuse prevention. He has written numerous books and
articles on these subjects, and has received awards from professional
organizations and self-advocacy groups.
FRIDAY, March 15
Registration, 8:15 am
Workshops, 9 am - 4 pm
The workshops presented today are intended for parents, caregivers,
providers, agency personnel, and others who live and work with individuals
with developmental disabilities.
Morning Session
Ethics of Touch: This workshop will address complex issues including:
provision of intimate care, maintaining respectful boundaries, avoiding
potentially abusive situations, and establishing an environment that allows
people with disabilities to distinguish those who help from those who hurt.
Afternoon Session
Myths and Misconceptions: Dave will explore the many misconceptions
regarding healthy sexuality for people with developmental disabilities.
SATURDAY, March 16
Registration, 8:15 am
Workshops, 9 am - 4 pm
For individuals with developmental disabilities aged 16 and older, their
parents, caregivers, and those who work with individuals with disabilities.
Workshops for parents and individuals with disabilities will run
concurrently.
Morning Session
For individuals with disabilities
Just Say Know: Focuses on learning to say NO! and how to and when to
non-comply. Teaches language about the body as well as discussing feelings
and privacy. Note: This session is for people with developmental
disabilities, NOT their support staff and/or family members, who will NOT BE
ADMITTED to the workshop.
Session for parents, caregivers, and others
Panel of Community Experts:
Janet Austin, The Advocacy Center, and Deb Anderson speaking on
Self-Advocacy
Trudy Fletcher, FLDDSO, speaking on NYS Cares and other initiatives
Joanne Baxter from MRDD/Psychiatric Disorder Clinic speaking on Grief and
Depression in Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
SATURDAY, March 16
Afternoon Sessions
Individuals with developmental disabilities will participate in a variety of
fun-filled activities, including dance, art therapy, and self-advocacy
sessions.
Dave will present "Ring of Safety" to parents, caregivers, and others.
"Ring of Safety" involves strategies on how to keep individuals with
developmental disabilities safe while addressing the issue of their
sexuality.

Friday, $30
Saturday, $30
Individual with a disability for Saturday, $30
Fees include continental breakfast, lunch, and cookie networking reception.
