Accessible Parking Permits - Changes to National Eligibility Standards
The Australian Government has released a discussion paper and invites public
comment on the proposed Australian Disability Parking Scheme. The
harmonisation of Disability Parking Permit Schemes in Australia is a
Government election commitment and a $3 million Federal Budget commitment
has been made to support the implementation of the Scheme across Australia
by the end of 2010. The scheme aims to improve opportunities for eligible
people with disability by providing consistent national accessible parking
arrangements with reciprocal recognition of permits between jurisdictions.
To view the paper, which includes how to make a submission, visit

.
There is some concern that the guidelines are too limited; people who can
walk without physical assistance from another person, with or without a
cane, no matter how restricted their walking distance, will no longer have
access to accessible parking. One web site that outlines concerns and gives
template letters for writing to your local member of parliament can be found
at

.
Submissions to government close 31st July 2009.
