Our GP does the same thing - I often leave his office with a script for
antibiotics "in case" we need them, especially if the consult is late in the
week.
As we still use liquid antibiotics with Alex I usually have an unmade up
bottle here until the expiry date is up. If I need them we just add the
water and shake.

For us the indications for use is usually overt signs of bacterial infection
eg coloured discharge eg green coloured nasal junk or sputum or a high
temperature (usually in the absence of viral signs eg pink tinge about the
eyes) of 38C and above.

I also don't use panadol or anything medicinal to relieve temperatures
unless they get above 39C. I figure that temperatures are the bodies way of
fighting whatever it is and its best not to hinder the process. Not to
mention the fact that panadol (tylenol)s often lowers Alex's temperature too
far.

That caused problems whilst I had round the clock nursing for Alex when I
was sick as not all nurses agreed with me, but it works as far as I am
concerned. A friends child had a recent run of the flu and so did her
husband. The child got no fever reducers and the flu was over within a few
days, the husband however soldiered on and took all sorts of flu
preparations and it lingered on for weeks.
