Jude,
Yes we are in the Charleston area. All of these children were born at Medical
University of South Carolina (best medical facility in the area) Prior to
Bryson being born, we only knew about the cleft lip and possible cleft palate
so my daughter's prenatal care was transferred to MUSC because he was at risk
of feeding problems after birth. It wasn't until after he was born that he was
diagnosed through karyotyping that he had Full T13 Same with this young lady
down the street. She was 32 weeks gestation. She had preeclampsia and had an
infection and was transferred to MUSC for high risk care. After the baby was
born and before the mother took seriously ill, she got to hold her baby in her
arms when she passed. The infection was pretty bad and spread to her kidneys
and lungs and she had to be placed on a vent and strong antibiotics. They
almost lost the mother 3 separate times. It has been a week frought with
suffering for this family.
We that live here in this neighborhood are all very concerned as these are our
children, the next generation that are having these rare disorders with their
babies. Several other of "our kids" from the neighborhood also are infertile
though they have been trying. My daughter and son-in-law (also from the
neighborhood) have been trying to get pregnant for two years with no success.
This again is why I asked if it's something possibly environmental. Many of us
concerned have lived here from 13-16 years. Many of us moved here when our
children were pre-teen.
Nonetheless, I'm hoping that at least DHEC (Dept. of Health & Environmental
Control) should have the necessary stats on the health of newborns, stillbirths
etc in this community.
What brought you to South Carolina Jude? And then to Boulder?
