Oh I just remembered something else on this subject. Maxine (Ian's partner)
used to work in a home for disabled children. She became aware that SOME
staff members were not treating the kids the way they should. She was
authorised to do training sessions for new staff members, and this
included, feeding issues. She would blindfold the person and then show them
what it felt like to have food shoveled into his/her mouth before they had
finished the last spoonful. She also caught a staff member cleaning several
kids teeth WITH THE SAME TOOTHBRUSH, so sat him (yes it was a man) down and
offered to cleaned his teeth with the same brush (YUK) that got the message
home. Some staff members were mixing inappropriate foods together to save
time eg porridge and baked beans. She asks them would they eat that? These
things just illustrate how switched off some people are to the needs and
feelings of disabled people.
