Subject: [tri-med] Day recap and update
Thanks to all... It's been an interesting day.
About 5:30 this morning I woke up to go to the bathroom and found Hannah
laying in her bed, no gown on and the lights on but no one around. I vaguely
remember people talking in the room so I went on into the bathroom and when
I came out her nurse was with her. She asked me how I thought Hannah's color
was. She was pretty pale so I said that and then rubbed her arm. Brandi
(nurse) said that her lips had been purple and blue and she also wasn't
really responding. I spent 10-15 minutes trying to wake her, jostling her,
tickling, pinching, scratching, talking to her... anything I could but, I
didn't get even a twitch. Before I was up Brandi said that her sats had
dropped, but not dramatically, and her breathing was (and continued to be)
very shallow. She had called in help (respiratory had been there before I
got up and had come back just after I got out of the bathroom so they were
in there also) so people started arriving and we still couldn't get her to
do anything. They started bagging her to assist her breathing and then
called in the rapid response team. Before long there were 12 people working
on her... several trying to get an IV going, bagging, suctioning, assisting
with other things. I just sat on the edge of the bed. I did call Donn a
short time after this all started and he said that he'd get Caty to school
(about 2 hours from then - he wanted to get the sleep because he was afraid
he'd fall asleep on the way) and then come straight there. When it was
really starting to look bad I called him again and told him to bring Zach to
keep him awake in the car and to get there fast. By the time they got here
she had been transferred back upstairs to the PICU. She did start reacting
to things shortly before that but they had her on 50% O2 (and she had been
on room air) and were bagging her. The PICU room even had a ventilator set
up just in case.
Where it stands now is that they think it might had been a plug but I would
tend to think that would make her breathing more labored, not real shallow,
so who knows. And she wasn't retracting at all. They are also going to be
giving her nebulizer treatments that will thin out the mucus so hopefully
make it easier to get it out of her. And she's running fevers again.
Hopefully she will have a good night and we will be going back to her other
room tomorrow. Again they have let us keep our things in there and just
hang.
Because she is in the PICU we were both able to come home tonight. She was
resting comfortably with good sats and down to 40% O2 when we left the
hospital. So we're home now and getting ready to call it a
day/night/whatever and go to sleep.
Again, thank you.
