Hi! Elanor was born with cleft lip and palate, and we had the lip
repaired long ago. We have chosen not to do the palate repair yet
because she doesn't eat orally yet. We give her small amounts of soft
foods, but the open palate doesn't seem to interfere. We haven't
noticed much come out of her nose, or sneezing, but she really doesn't
take that much by mouth. Another reason we haven't gotten the palate
fixed is because she has obstructive sleep apnea. I guess her tongue is
pretty large and causes obstructions even without the palate. Our
plastic surgeon was pretty surprised to learn about the apneas, since
most kids with cleft palates usually don't have that problem because of
the open space there. I'm not really familiar with the procedure (we'll
cross that bridge when we come to it!), but I think they usually take a
graft from the hip bone to insert into the palate. That may be a little
more difficult than the lip repair, but I'm not sure. Have they gone
into the details with you?
Hope everything goes well! It does seem like everything comes at once,
doesn't it!

Subject: [tri-med] Cleft Palate Repair...
Wondered if anyone out there has gone through a cleft palate repair with
and
old trier like Matthew? Matthew will be 3 in September and we are still
trying to get solid food to be a larger part of his diet. His cleft
palate
surgery is scheduled for July 26th. We are hoping that recovery will be
about the same as the lip repair (about 2-3 weeks) as I am due on the
23rd
of August!
