[tri-med] Re: Chloral hydrate JUDE and anyone else who wnts to read. :)

When Bryson was two weeks old, he was prescribed Morphine for pain. (which at
the time, we didn't know if he even had pain issues) He would cry for endless
hours, therefore we thought he might be in pain, gave him the Morphine and
within 15 minutes, would have a central apnea episode. It dawned on me that
Morphine was causing him to desat and we never administered it ever again. Our
kiddos do metabolize things differently than a typical child, therefore, it is
very very important that you have an anesthetist that knows how to deal with
triers.

Spend a lot of time getting familiar with different types of sedation methods
and it's effects before your child has any procedures. Interview the
anesthetist as if he were applying for a job, which he is. You as the parent,
still have the last word. Of course, this all applies to scheduled procedures.
Emergency medical interventions you may not have the luxury of an interview.
Keep a copy of your child's medical record handy where you can grab it in case
of an emergency.
