Hi Wendi :o)
When Devon was 2 1/2 yrs and we found out he was aspirating every
swallow/every consistency, our pulmonologist recommended that Devon
intensive oral motor therapy. He said it needed to be a specially trained
speechy not just a speech therapist. We took Devon 3 times a week for a year
and she gave us oral motor exercises to do with him at home, she worked with
him with chew bags with all manner of things in them, & she used a Nook oral
motor "brush"...different texured ones. All these things taught Devon how to
manipulate food in his mouth over to his molars so he could chew it
correctly before swallowing. Coupled with the thickener for thin
liquids...all the things she did taught him to better control food and
drinks. So much so that he can handle SOOOOOOOO many yummy things now, so
his diet isn't so limited. He still can't eat raw veggies or chops or steak
unless it's REALLY fall apart tender and no gummy bears or skittle type
things...but he can eat my chicken, he can eat snack bars, cereal, cooked
veggies, breads, cakes, cookies etc...and when were having something he
can't handle, he eats the Weight Watchers Smart Ones meals or Lean Quisine
meals :O) He LOVES quite a few of them :o) And since he was weighed
yesterday at his pulmonology clinic and wighed 92 pounds...I'm thinking it's
a good idea...those weight watchers and lean quisine meals :O) LOL
