We are having similar findings with our services. It's tough (especially
since hubby works in the district) For PT we ended up finding a private
practice-he comes in once a week and EI PT comes in once a week. She does a
good job as well--just had to really push to get time. If you don't feel she
is doing her job and she comes out a lot, just talk to her or the case
manager and that can be changed. We also went outside of the district for
speech--our experience is very similar except our speech teacher only comes
out once a month-so I let her come but really listen to the one that comes
more often-she seems like she knows more. I think that PT, OT and speech
therapists should ALL have to work in a hospital setting for awhile before
going to the schools or EI programs. It really seems that they are so much
more rounded as therapists. With children like ours I think you really have
to have a medical point of view and not soly a "school/education" point of
view. We are now struggling with the idea of going out of the district for
OT as well...our OT only comes out once a month-but the EI teacher comes out
twice a week and works on OT things?? Who knows...
I think that parents are scared to go out of the district-they don't want to
"butt heads" with the school. Lets face it, I know that the school gets
irritated when people do this-they say they don't but hey-basically you are
slapping them in the face and saying they aren't doing their job. It isn't
wrong to do that--I guess I just think that the independent therapists
usually come from hospitals and they have more medical experience. Many
parents probably just don't realize what a difference there is-I don't think
we would've unless our dr wouldn't have had the PT call us and schedule an
appointment. It is a tough call though because you have to "work" with these
people for many years and you don't want to rock the boat in EI...
Good luck-I'm with you though, I've had much better luck w/independent
therapists vs. EI therapists. FYI: some states don't actually have EI
therapists-they are just people that have been "trained" to do PT, OT
work-this may be something you could check into...is she really a PT??
