Ali started taking respiradol the month she had her first period. She was 14,
so you know she was a bit late on that front. For Christmas that year I had
bought her Sear's tank top undershirts for Christmas because she had no
interest at all in wearing a bra (sensory issues). She started the med in
Jan-Feb and
by summer she had grown to a 38 D and about 3-4 inches and about 30 pounds.
At firstI thought it was just a delayed growth spurt, but by the following
year, she had topped out at 5'5", was wearing 40 DD and weighed about 165. And
the
medication was not doing a darn thing, so I went on line and after much
digging I found the complete side effects info for the medication. Just as
Fawna
found about the Strattera, when you get down to the finest of the fine print,
there it was. " May cause development of breast tissue and lactation". And not
just in girls, either. Even though we discontinued the medication, she did not
start to lose the excess weight until she started on the casien-gluten free
diet. I was on several autism/ts list serves, and a lot of kids have been able
to take resperidol with no adverse side effects, but of all the meds she has
ever taken, that is most definitly the one I wish we could somehow get a
"do-over". I had a chance to visit with Temple Grandin, very well known in the
autism
circuit, and I told her about Ali's reaction. Her real life job is as a
designer of livestock facilities (slaughter houses) and asssitant professor of
animal science at Colorado State. When I told her about the breast development,
lactation and weight gain, her comment was, lets hope our meat manufactures
NEVER find out. Bad enough we have to worry about hormones in our food supply,
who
can imagine a steak laced with neuroleptic medication. LOL I am not a fan of
that particular medication, even though it has been a life saver for some,
especially with autism.
