I used to give blood regularly up until I was preg for Alex. I got back on
track again but after the pregnancy/miscarriage, trying to get preg again
and then pregnancy and 1 year of breast feeding I got out of the loop for
almost 3 years.

Now I'm a sporadic donator. Last time was when a teachers baby needed blood,
they had a blood drive.

Both Jim and my Dad were long-time frequent donors. Then both were 'black
listed' by the American Red Cross after 2 times of them getting results they
didn't like from the blood.

Both were for Hepatitis C, and both Jim and Dad were later cleared by their
own drs and told that it was FALSE positives.
However, the American Red Cross will not EVER take their blood again.

I know they screen and check the blood. But still, things slip through.

Almost everyone I know who has the chance (non-emergency surgery/treatment)
banks their own blood or a trusted friend/family member's blood.

If either Alex or Molly was unable to bank their own blood (don't think Alex
weighs enough), then I would do it (the kids have my blood type, A+).

In fact, when it was looking like my Dad needed blood I was up, as my Mom
and brother have a different type from Dad and I.

I'm sure the blood bank is very reliable but it's one of those 'why take the
chance if you don't have to' situations.
