Yep - add mosaic to a diagnosis and you are the safest of all in knowing
that it wasnt inherited.

Most trisomies occur BEFORE conception, mosaicism occurs AFTER.

Of course the person who has a mosaic diagnosis is in a totally different
situation when they decide to have children. If they are fertile (and there
is no reason that they shouldn't be unless the trisomy has effected the
development of the reproductive organs) then the chances of them having a
child with the FULL variant are 50/50. Either the sperm (or eggs) have the
trisomy or they don't. So in Alex's case he will either have children with
full trisomy 18 or they will be "normal". They wont have mosaicism.

For the record - those folk with mosaic Trisomy 18 who have had children
have either had full T-18 or the parents have opted for artifical conception
to make sure they dont have trisomy 18.

When Alex decides to have a family I will let you know the outcome - at the
moment the geneticists here are quite adamant that its not my right to know
whether Alex can have children or not - thats his decision when the time
comes. (confidentiality reasons - and as much as I like to be the
controlling mother I see their point, its Alex's right not mine)
