Wendy: My daughter Emily (T13 Mosaic) was born premature at 31 weeks and was
intubated immediatly. She remained intubated on and off for 4 months. She
also several surgies during this time. She had NEC - hole in her intestine
She had a surgery to repair and ended up with a colostomy. She had both ASD
and VSD - holes in heart and had open heart surgery to repair. She had an
abscess in her abdomen and was opened to drain and repair more damage to
intestines. She had another surgery to reverse her colostomy. All of this
within 5 months... and then she came home. She remained on oxygen for a
year. At 11 months she hag more surgery - fundoplication (stomach wrap) for
reflux and a feeding tube placed. And many more procedures and machines
along the way.
Now she is 6 years old and doing pretty well. She attends a school for
trainable mentally impaired children. She still has her feeding tube and is
still on a few meds for reflux as well as some meds for behavioral problems.
With all that said... she is an absolute joy. She has a wonderful
personality, a sense of humor, unconditional love for everyone, a smile to
brighten up anyones day, she walks, she talks, and enjoys life.
I know this is not the norm that you continually read about, but there are
some kids who get through a lot and do very well. Most of these stories are
harder to find. But they do exist. I hope this offers you some
encouragement.
