Hi Karen,
Hayden has a trach. It was inserted when he was 2 months because of
Pierre Robin syndrome. (small lower mandible.) He was not on oxygen even
before he was trached because his saturations were normal. He was
trached as an insurance policy because of his small jaw. They felt that
if Hayden needed emergency intubation they would never have been able to
save his life because his jaw, mouth and airway were too small to get
into. So the trach was placed for that reason. He didnt start needing
oxygen until after his first cold when he was 7 months old. and has been
off and on ever since. Had been on it for a long time after suffering
RSV. The prdnisone was given several times and the first 2 times he was
sick he was weened off oxygen before he ever went home from the
hospital. He did have his trach removed for 2 months last summer but had
to have it reinserted in an emergency. He kept getting aspirate
pnuemonia. He seems to be outgrowing his respiratory problems lately as
he spent no time at all this winter in the hospital for colds. YEAH!!
And we shut his oxygen off about a week ago and he has been in no need
of since and we are hoping to continue that way!! YEAH!! again. I guess
his growth could have been attributed to both but it seems to me that it
was more the steroids but because of the chubbiness and the moon face
that he had and that it all happened very quickly. He hasnt been on
Prednisone for over a year and he has slimmed down quite a bit and looks
longer instead of squatty..lol. I never thought of teh oxygen part tho.
