[tri-med] Re: Any info on Dyspraxia?

Katy one of the papers on the apraxia kids site is following. I loved it as
it gives great ideas for actually working at home with our kids and for how
to get the right help for them...I found it one of the most practical
articles I have read in a long time and probably is because the author is
not just a speech/language pathologist but the mom of a little girl with
Downs and she outlines very simply some of the steps she took to help her
child.

Hi Gary,

My son is t8m and 3 years old and has very delayed
speech. He seems to try so hard to say certain words
but can't get the word out or maybe the end of the
word, for example - he tries to say Tigger and it
comesout after lots of concentration as Ger. He also
went through stages where he would finally say Da for
dad or ook for book and then this would disappear and
he would never say it again. I have spoken to his
speech therapist time and time again, she has
mentioned dyspraxia but has never given any advice. I
get quite upset sometimes as I know he understands
everything I am saying to him but he gets so
frustrated trying to express himself.
One thing I think has helped alot is me learning
Signalong a from a makaton sign language and teaching
my son bits and pieces. He took to it straight away
and we has even started to make up his own signs which
gets a bit tricky for us.
I would be grateful if you could share any info you
find that helps as I understand your frustration.

Katy. sont8m 3 years old.
