Hi Gary and Elizabeth,
My Becky has a level of verbal dyspraxia and the speech therapist gave us
some ways for Bec to reduce her frustration in communication. We use some
word books, cards when she was young as she is able to see and point to
either the picture or word that she is looking for as she can see and
understands the picture just can't retrieve verbally. I was recently doing
some reading on patients who have had surgery to reduce seizures and have
verbal dyspraxia following the severing of certain connections from one side
of the brain to the other...sorry my condensed version is pretty pathetic,
but Bec's ability to answer a question with a picture but not able to
retrieve the words seems to fit.
We also have worked on associations, i.e. if she is trying to tell us
something we basically play twenty (or 100 :)) questions and help her track
down the right words or substitute something close. It is still frustrating
and at times rather funny i.e. a friend is having a barbeque to which Bec
has not received an invite. so... on the way home today Bec said that maybe
she will 'wreck' the barbeque...of course she is meaning she would like to
'crash' the barbeque it was close enough and as I knew the context was
impressed with her substitution. I have her in reading tutoring right now
and her reading teacher told me that Bec likes to guess at words rather than
go to the trouble of sounding out the word so this week when presented with
the three letter word 'mad' she was reading angry, she is comprehending just
fine but the mechanics of locating, retrieving the sounds is an ongoing
struggle. Don't give up! Keep talking to Stephen as if he understands
everything, keep reading to him and keep track of context so that when he
does succeed in finding the right words he gets positive feedback.

Hi,
=20
Stephen was diagnosed with Verbal Dyspraxia - He understands a lot but
cannot put the response into words. Our geneticist said that this is
common with Downs syndrome children as well as T13. I have a few
questions for the group:
=20
1. Anyone have any experience wiht Dyspraxia? We'd love any
recommendations you might have regarding documents, tips, whether your
child was able to eventually speak, etc. =20

2. Elizabeth has been reading a bunch about Dyspraxia and the authors
generally say that different techniques are required than the typical
ones used with speech therapy; however, they never describe what these
"different techniques" are. Anyone have any suggestions in this area?

Thanks everyone,
Gary (and Elizabeth) parents of Daniel (18), Michael (16), Joshua (14),
Rachel (12), John (10), Nathan (8), Esther (6) and Stephen (almost 3)
(T13 Mosaic born 10/5/04)
