And unfortunately I have one potentially negative thing to add about
EFA's. Now don't get me wrong, because I DO give them to Miss P as
well, and have seen some improvement in both the sounds that she can
make, and her level of her "shrieks" (a bit quieter when she's getting
them). But at least a year ago I forwarded a question from a mom who
wanted to know if it was safe to give them with seizure meds, but none
of us knew the answer. Well I recently went to a one day conference put
on by the San Diego Epilepsy Foundation, and didn't even have to ask the
question, because the pharmacist who did the talk "Before You Swallow
That Pill" included the answer, along with some other surprising contra
indicated items.
If the EFA's contain Evening Primrose Oil, it will interfere with the
absorption of the seizure med. Other no-no's...Caffeine & Aspartame.
Grapefruit or Pomegranate juice increase the toxicity of some
anticonvulsants
St John's Wort or decongestants containing Pseudofed increase the risk of
break through seizures, as also will most antacids which form a physical
barrier causing poor absorption. Tums however are okay.
