I am surprised that they did, but I think you will find that they can.
Its considered the same as deciding when to stop resuscitating a person -
professional judgement.
There have been court cases and the only people that can decide over
"professional judgement" are the courts, and they are certainly not
guaranteed to decide one way or the other. The recent case in the UK where
the courts ruled in favour of the doctor's/hospitals right to place a DNR on
an 11 year old boy with CP made me quake in my boots literally.
