Subject: [tri-med] AFO's
A very excited Alex picked up his AFO's yesterday. He was so excited,
never ceases to amaze me what amuses kids.
The tech was amazing. Rob still hand makes each and every set of AFO's
(here in Australia we are just breaking into the regime of using
companies to manufacture AFO's). There were only 3 spots that needed
flaring on the first fitting.
He started his breaking in regime last night and wore them for an hour.
At the end of the hour he was still excited :-)) He is so looking
forward to being able to run, try out some roller skates etc.
Mum on the other hand is looking forward to less sprains, strains,
scrapes and breaks :-))
But I still have to deal with the practicalities <sigh>. Overnight he
has gone from a size 3 - 4 shoe to an 8!!!! (I only wear a 7!!) So I am
shopping today for new shoes (what happened to this weeks budget :-( I
tried getting long socks yesterday but it seems no one is making long
socks any more :-(( let alone tube socks. So I guess I get to invest in
a few rolls of tubigrip.
I also need to ring the orthotist today because we ended up with a tiny
sore after the first hours wear. Mind you he gave me permission to flare
them myself if need be. We were talking about the dumb things people do
for pressure areas when I mentioned people padding AFO's (or any
orthotics) with foam and how silly that was - he laughed and said that
if I was smart enough to know that that was a cardinal no no then he
trusted me to do whatever was needed LOL
They are hinged, but at the moment the hinge is fixed until he gets used
to them. I can undo the locking screw in a couple of weeks.
What I am not looking forward to is him wearing them in bed!! Alex still
sleeps with me part of the night and I can see me scoring more than a
few bruises.
I have not lost my mind - it's backed up on disk somewhere.
