Flunking her OAE's simply means that the hair cells in her ear are damaged
and this means she most likely will have some degree of hearing loss. Alex
has always flunked his OAE's but he does have some hearing.

As to whether they can do anything to help - it will depend on the ABR. An
ABR is simply a hearing test that they do, but one in which the child doesnt
need to co-operate.

They get the child to sleep (I used to just overtire the master and do it
but usually they use some sort of sedative). They attach little electrodes
to their head and then they place headphones over their ears, and send
"pings" through the headphones at different frequencies and loudness.

From the electrodes on the head they watch the brain waves and see what they
hear.

Depending on the level and type of deafness they can prescribe hearing aids
and specific teaching.

Alex is profoundly deaf in his right ear, and when he was little he was
profoundly deaf in his left, that improved to mild and now he is moderately
deaf in the left. He has used hearing aids for years and I also chose to
teach him signing as well as speech. It all seemed to work because now I
have trouble getting him to be quiet............
