An auditory trainer is essentially a personal FM system. The child wears a
set of headphones (if they are deaf they attach to the hearing aids) which
are attached to a receiver. The speaker (or teacher or whoever) wears a
microphone which is attached to a transmitter. When the microphone wearer
speaks it is transmitted directly to the headphones and thats all they hear.
All background and extraneous noises are eliminated and all they hear is the
speech.

Alex is deaf in one ear so he would ordinarily need one ear attached to his
hearing aid and one to a headphone - not really practical. So we are using a
hearing aid in his good ear but with minimal or no amplification. If he had
no hearing loss it would just be headphones. (called a PEAL system). Its
made a huge difference to his ability to learn and understand what his
teacher is saying. We also use it in the car (engine noises, no matter how
quiet really effect his ability to listen) and also when out in a noisy
environment, watching TV etc. Anywhere that he really needs to listen.

You can get a room FM - but they arent portable for use elsewhere.
