Hamas Victory
The media says the victory of the militant Hamas group in
Palestinian elections is a bad thing. Some commentators point out
that the pro-occupation policies of Israel and the United States are
responsible for the rise of Hamas.

March:
March 5 is Job Security for Foreigners Day 2006
More than 90% of foreign workers in Japan are hired on fixed-term
contracts, leaving them vunerable to dismissal or non-renewal. Last
year, over 300 people took to the streets in Tokyo to demand a stable
work environment, free from illegal dismissals, unpaid wages, or
discrimination. Demonstrations also took place in Fukuoka; this year,
the action will expand to include Osaka and Hokkaido. To get involved,
contact Louis Carlet at carlet-AT-jca.apc.org, or phone 03-3434-0669.

TokyoProgressive has been in existence in various
incarnations since 1997. Originally conceived as a tool to help
Japanese students of English and alternative media develop critical
literacy skills, it has developed into a resource for promoting a
democratic media. This is a sometimes ambiguous term that includes
liberating information withheld or distorted by the corporate media. It
also means understanding that all media, including TokyoProgressive, is
biased and that objectivity is a myth.

TokyoProgressive is committed to
providing news and commentary which helps its readers to go beyond
being mere consumers of information and look at issues
critically in order to affect the world they live in. In other
words, we seek to "connnect the dots" that are
all-to-often left as
they are by the mainstream media. We do that both through the news
stories themselves as well as our commentaries--"Our take on
the
matter"--but as we cannot hope to cover everything, we
encourage you
to explore issues encountered here further.
Here are some sites which we feel do a better-than-average job in critically
examining the issues:

Few sites have such broad coverage of the issues as ZNet (and Z
