Koizumi: Sending Soldiers Off to Die for Democracy?
As Koizumi sends Japanese soldiers to help the U.S. occupy Iraq after the U.S.
killed so many innocent civilians, and after so many of its own have been
killed or wounded, there is a great possibility that many SDF soldiers will
themselves be killed or injured defending oil interests.
Those of you who think there is something good in what Koizumi is doing, read
this essay by Howard Zinn and think again. Howard Zinn: The Ultimate Betrayal

Polo, Ralph Lauren, Sara Lee: Making a Killing on the
Backs of Sweatshop Workers
After a petition politely requesting a tiny pay raise, the company paid half
of what was asked for, and promptly fired Leonor and the other delegates.
TAKE ACTION: See bottom of story for ways to put pressure on the U.S.,
Canadian and Japanese management of SARA LEE.

But you do not have to go to Mexico to find victims of a ruthless economic
system. They are, and they always HAVE been right here. Only they are
becoming more and more easy to spot. Ueno's Homeless, courtesy of a
TokyoProgressive reader, is the kind of story that the mainstream media does
not like to dwell upon, but places like this are becoming more and more
numeorus with the weak economy.

Meanwhile, here is something from Japan IndyMedia on the Osaka Homless Support
Group, which also gives a detailed background of the issue. Please also see

Media
There are many stories about Japan that fail to be given the attention they
deserve, but it is not only Japan where the media is asleep. While Western
media owners like to complain that Japan's infamous KISHA CLUB system is to
blame (it DOES encourage self censorship), the truth is that it is a disease
that afflicts all profit-minded media businesses. Please see Under-Reported
Stories for some criticism by journlaism professor Asano Ken'ichi as well as
stories from the recent past you may not have seen in the Japanese media, or
anywhere else. Also, check out many stories from this year and years past
from Project Censored, a project of Sonoma College Faulty and Students.

Corporate Watch:Latest reports show us what Multinationals are doing in the
name of Globalization to make life miserable for the weak and disposssed,
which includes many people living on the developed world as well. Subtopics
include the WTO, Genetically Modified Food, Deregulation, Pesticides, Human
Rights, Internet Politics, the Education Industry, and more.

Haiti and Venezuela
The media would like to pretend that if it weren't for the undemocratic
policies of Haitian president Aristide, all would be well in that country.
The reality is quite a bit more complicated, and involves U.S. complicity in
and support for the crimes of his opponnents, both now and under Clinton.
Read Power Struggles in Haiti and Venezuela, which also tries to counter the
view presented in the American press that Venezuelan president Chavez is a
tyrant and that his opponents constitute a pro-democracy movement. At the
same time, check out Q and A on Haiti from Chomsky Chat on Znet for more
insights.

Israel/Palestine
Rightist supporters of Israeli government occupation of Palestinian territory
would like us to view its opponents as anti-semitic. Here is a report from a
delegate to the World Social Forum which provides quite a bit of evidence
giving the lie to that claim: Jewish Voice for Peace: Cecilie Surasky on
"Anti-Semitism" at the World Social Forum
