                         ----------------------------------

TokyoProgressive wishes a happy new year. Even though there may not be many
happy things in the news, one good thing is that there are so many people
here in Japan and around the world working to bring about a society
characterized by peace and justice for all. One way is by looking beyond the
mainstream media, which is what we try to do, too. We are always in need of
more stories and activism reports from Japan asn Asia, so please use the Self
Publishing facility or email:

This issue:

NEWS STARTS BELOW. BUT FIRST AN ANNOUNCEMENT
ABOUT TWO NEW WEB SOURCES OF NEWS....

(skip below to read TokyoProgressive News)

Two websites that deserve attention. One is the the NEWS INSIDER, a site much
like Common Dreams, but with more of an alternative focus, most often
uncovering stories covered in some of the mainstream media, though not
necessarily in one most Japanese or Americans read.

Their address is
http://www.newsinsider.org/

The other is NEW STANDARD--http://newstandardnews.net-- which strives to not
ONLY bring you alternative news coverage but to scrupulously research and
check the stories themselves. These are NOT just repetitions of what you see
in other media. They are not commentaries. They are hard news, written by
activists who believe that we must be accurate and precise in what we write
and not simply rely on speculation or principle.

Their page for journalists is here, in case you want to offer your services:
http://newstandardnews.net/promo2/?action=show_journalists

A sample of a story that came in as we were sending this out is here:
THAILAND COVERING UP BIRD FLU
http://newstandardnews.net/content/?action=show_item&itemid=114

There is more below!

And coming soon will be other features for supporters, such as Alive Wires:

"AliveWires are certain to be one of the most exciting interactive aspects of
the PeoplesNetWorks site. Enabling professional media activists and everyday
people alike to create a dynamic presence on the Web, AliveWires will include
simple tools for rapid yet elegant publishing. Community activists, news
hounds, soap-boxers and small media businesses will all find elements of
AliveWires suited for their purposes. Whether they're being used as casual
"blogs," or officially-sanctioned local editions of The NewStandard, or third
party independent publications wishing to take advantage of the PNW
Partnership Program, AliveWires are a simple, flexible publishing solution.
All PeoplesNetWorks staff and NewStandard contributors will be encouraged to
establish and maintain their own AliveWire weblogs."

Details here:

 Their donation page is here:

Please support The New Standard and help raise the standard of alternative
journalism.

LEAD STORY: Bush's Self Invite to MLK Memorial Sparks Protest
While Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi sends soldiers to help U.S. soldiers
kill, and risk death death themselves, the man Koizumi pretends is helping
Iraq rather than conquering it, Geroge W. Bush, was the target of protestors
who objected to his presence at a memorial to Martin Luther King, a man who
almost certainly would have been protesting this obscenity. It is time for
more people in Japan to protest this obscene man's actions and to oppose the
dispatch of the SDF, not just because soldiers will die needlessly, but
because they will do so helping to kill Iraqis for the U.S empire.
