Police Force Declares War on Japan's Peace Protesters

Mark Schreiber offers a translation of a Shukan Kinyobi piece on how
Japan's police intimidate people and help to weaken the Japanese peace
movement by arresting people who are not committing any crimes
whatsoever. As a participant in the human rights movement on behalf of
the predominantly Korean and Chinese 3rd generation activists who were
fighting discrimination by the state in the form of fingerprinting
during the 80s and 90s, I have witnessed many of the same police
tactics. Of course, reactionary governments worldwide, faced with a new
generation of activists who see the connection between racism,
globalization and militarism, are increasingly becoming hardline. But
coupled with the horrible lack of alternartive information in places
like Japan, it is indeed a lonely fight for those seeking a more
democratic world, and a more democratic Japan.

Has the Right Hijacked North Korea-Abductee Issue?
by David McNeill and Andreas Hippin

Among other things, the authors talk about how the Japanese public is
being fed lies and half truths by the rightist media (Shukan Post, etc.),
such as that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has formed a "secret
alliance with Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda, even as his regime prepares
thousands of gallons of chemical weapons to drop over Japan’s cities".
They note how a media campaign by the likes of the Yomiuri and Sankei is
tinged with hysteria and how the unsubstantiated ravings of the rightist
governor Ishihara Shintaro or Fuji TV are widely believed by a public
that is given no alternative news. The rightwing lawmaker Abe Shinzo,
has used a hardlne position (including breaking government promises to
North Korea) to get one of the top government positions. Most people do
not know that Abe is the grandson of Kishi Nobusuke, "who mixed with
some of the most notorious ultra-nationalist and Yakuza figures in Japan".
Or that he supports visits to Yasukuni Shrine. Or that Hitoshi Tanaka,
"the senior Foreign Ministry official whose contacts with a high-placed
North Korean official led to last year's short-lived breakthrough in
relations)" was an Abe opponent. Or that Ishihara Shintaro, who would
like a war with North Korea, said that Tanaka deserved it when a bomb
was found in his house. It should be noted that it is the very same
right wingers who claim Japan needs to revise a Constitution they say
was forced on Japan by the U.S., even though the U.S. is very happy that
Japan is remilitarizing and supporting its Imperial adventures in Iraq
and elesewhere.

9-11 and Military Families Speak Out Against U.S. War

...Bush says that we have to stay to stop the attacks, but it's clear
that our staying is causing attacks.....

...The military does all kinds of things to recruit Hispanics, African
American and poor Anglos -- how many children of congressmen or CEOs

...While in Iraq, civilians told us over and over again that our
planned military action would increase terrorism...

Up to 15,000 People Killed in Invasion, Claims Thinktank

As many as 15,000 Iraqis were killed in the first days of America's
invasion and occupation of Iraq, a study produced by an independent US
thinktank said yesterday. Up to 4,300 of the dead were civilian
noncombatants

President Bush's "Victory" Banners Managed by Former ABC TV Newsman

The triumphal "Mission Accomplished" banner was the pride of the White
House advance team, the image makers who set the stage for the
president's close-ups. On May 1, on a golden Pacific evening aboard the
carrier Abraham Lincoln, they made sure that the banner was perfectly
captured in the camera shots of President Bush's speech declaring major
combat in Iraq at an end.

Tony Blair's New Friend: Britain and the US Claim a Moral Mandate -
and Back a Dictator Who Boils Victims to Death

by George Monbiot

The British and US governments gave three reasons for going to war with
Iraq. The first was to extend the war on terrorism. The second was to
destroy its weapons of mass destruction before they could be deployed.
The third was to remove a brutal regime, which had tortured and murdered
its people. If the purpose of the war was to defeat terrorism, it has
failed. Before the invasion, there was no demonstrable link between
al-Qaida and Iraq. Today, al-Qaida appears to have moved into that
country, to exploit a new range of accessible western targets. If the
purpose of the war was to destroy Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass
destruction before he deployed them, then, as no such weapons appear to
have existed, it was a war without moral or strategic justification.

While Japan's Koizumi Gets in Bed With Bush, Most Nations Back Off Sending
Troops

Bangladesh and Portugal, two nations the Pentagon has pressed to send
combat troops to Iraq, have decided against contributing to the
U.S.-led force there. A third nation that once promised to send troops,
South Korea, says it has not made up its mind and has delayed a decision
pending further study.

                      ★RACISM★
-----------------------------------------------------------

What the Fighting Sioux can tell us about white people

A talk by Robert Jensen at the University of North Dakota on October 10,
2003, sponsored by BRIDGES, a student group that works to remove the
university's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

"I want to suggest to my fellow non-Indian North Dakotans -- those of
us whose ancestors came from some other continent, primarily those of
us who are white and of European descent -- that we should support the
campaign to change the University of North Dakota name and logo not
just because it is offensive, exploitative, and racist (it is all of
those things) but also for our own sake.... ...I say this because I
believe that we give up our dignity when we evade the truth, and we
surrender our humanity when we hold onto illegitimate power over others.

And I want to argue that is what the nickname controversy is really
about -- white America refusing to come to terms with the truth about
the invasion and conquest of North America, and refusing to acknowledge
the fundamental illegitimacy of its power over indigenous people as a
result of that conquest. It is about denial of the realities of the past
and the present. It is...about holocaust denial and the consequences of
that denial.

"Why would Israel want to deliberately sink a U.S. ship? One reason put

In addition, the chief attorney to the original 1967 Navy Court of
Inquiry said in a sworn affidavit that then-President Johnson and
then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the Court of Inquiry
to cover up the attack by presenting it as a mistake."

                 ★GLOBALIZATION★
-----------------------------------------------------------

                The Flight to India

                  By George Monbiot

"For centuries, we have permitted ourselves to ignore the extent to which
our welfare is dependant on the denial of other people's. We begin to
understand the implications of the system we have created only when it
turns against ourselves."

If you live in a rich nation in the English-speaking world, and most of
your work involves a computer or a telephone, don't expect to have a job
in five years' time. Almost every large company which relies upon remote
transactions is starting to dump its workers and hire a cheaper labour
force overseas. All those concerned about economic justice and the
distribution of wealth at home should despair. All those concerned about
global justice and the distribution of wealth around the world should
rejoice. As we are, by and large, the same people, we have a problem.

                     ******************

The Dangerous Deradicalization of AIDS Discourse

...The deal made by the Foundation was narrowed to one about AIDS, and
more specifically, antiretroviral drugs. This seems appropriate, but I
will argue that while it may be technically competent, it is not
politically so...AIDS will supposedly be solved through existing
behavioristic prevention measures and a few of these new types of drug
negotiations. In essence, the deal moves us back towards the days when
AIDS was treated as a singular entity, a problem to be addressed
without asking questions of why it has appeared the way it has, and why
it continues to sustain itself in the way it does (that is, why it
remains a disease of the poor)

....If AIDS is appearing so often in the context of trade agreements,
where the crash of primary commodity prices leads farmers to migrate to
industrial centers and break off their marriages, making "monogamy" a
nonsensical idea; if inequalities in access to jobs and education force
women into prostitution as the only means to survive; if the terms of
inequitable worker contracts mean that depression and drug abuse are the
only two options for workers in the lowest income sectors, then AIDS is
not just a syndrome, but an end-stage symptomof a much larger disease.....
