To Kris,
My humble thanks several times over for including the Hodges # in your moth
id's. With so many listings coming in from across the state each day, I can
literally spend hours each month just cross-referencing id's against the state
list. The Hodges # can often reduce those hours to minutes.
To all,
Thanks for continuing to send in FOY reports. I am checking each against the
state database, which continues to grow monthly. I am planning on again
posting a revised state list on or about July 1st. My apologies for not
posting anything of substance for White County so far. I am currently working
through about 300-400 photos taken since mid-February and will start reporting
some of those items belatedly as I am able to id them. Unfortunately, my moth
id skills don't come close to my skills with the database. When I start
posting, they will likely come in a flood. Meanwhile, it's back out to the
deck each evening, camera in hand and raccoon nearby ;-)
Gratefully,
Doug Downs

I know what you mean, I wake up sore some mornings from the positions I've put
my body through the night before trying to get all of a moth in focus! Ha! I'm
going to go out in a few minutes and try the techniques so many people have
recommended. My "blind pig" ID technique has helped me find some more moths,
I'm up to 87 now! 100, here I come!
Here are my latest findings:
81. Green Cutworm Moth Anicla
infecta 6-26-10
82. One-lined Sparganothis Moth-3711 Sparganothis unifasciana 6-26-10
83. Sculptured Moth Eumarozia
malachitana 6-26-10
84. Acleris
subnivana #3517 6-26-10
85. Cresson's Grass-tubeworm-Moth #0347 Acrolophus cressoni 6-25-10
86. Spotted Grass Moth #8404 Rivula propinqualis 6-26-10
87. Obtuse Yellow Moth #9725 Stiriodes obtusa 6-25-10
I'm going to start adding Hodges numbers, I now realize why they are so
important! It takes me a while to catch on to these new things! Ha!

With some of the contortions I go through to get moth pix, a tripod could be a
hazard. LOL My pix are pretty much for ID purposes only.

Yeah, having shaky hands at midnight is not a good thing! Do you have a
tripod?I got an LED head light a couple of weeks ago, but I just use it so I
can focus in areas that my porch light won't reach. I don't like the funky
color that the LED bulbs make, it's too blue. Plus, it is really irritating to
have moths flying around your face to reach the light when you are trying to
focus! :-0 I really want to balance the light on both sides of the moth too,
which the straight-on flashes won't do. I thought that Ray Flash attachment
would do the trick, but it doesn't. We're never satisfied with what we have,
are we? :)

Kris, I have a Canon Rebel XT with a Sigma 28-70 lens. I turn the flash off,
and use a Coleman headlamp with 33 power light. It has a lower light setting
which I use on white moths. I learned this combo from Audrey. Most of the
time, I let the camera focus automatically. (I need a good macro moth lens.)
If my pix are blurry, it's just my shaky hands at midnight. LOL

I have not been real happy with my macro flash shots on some of my moth
photos. I have a Nikon D90 with a 105mm macro lens. I have been using my
built-in flash, my hot-shoe flash, and an added RayFlash ring attachment. Some
of you have incredibly sharp close-up shots that I would like to get. Do any of
you use the dual flash attachments for close-up shots? If so, and you are a
Nikon shooter, which one do you use? I've seen different models at different
price ranges. Thanks for any advice!
