That would explain why I didn't find it with the Catocala spp. 

I think it should be called the Happy Underwing. :-)

Had this one last night. I've been going through the Catocala plates on MPG and 
noticed that many of them have an evil looking face hiding in their patterns 
while this one has a happy face. :-)
 
I couldn't get a shot of the hindwings but while chasing it around I did see 
that it had some red on them. Length was about 1.25 to 1.5 inches.
