Kris,

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. The variety of shapes, colors, forms, and
patterns of neotropical moths is, in a word, stunning. The 2 nights we
spent at Serra Bonita were amazing--never had I experienced the sheer
numbers of moths that were around the sheets and in the surrounding
vegetation. I wish I had taken a video to show the hundreds, if not
thousands, of moths that were constantly flying around the sheet, landing
on my clothes, hair, etc. It was like being in a moth vortex!

I can truthfully say that we did not encounter a single mosquito or any
biting insect at Serra Bonita and very few anywhere else we traveled in
Brazil. We encountered chiggers and ticks at a few places but nothing as
bad as eastern North Carolina in the summer!

No immunizations are required for the part of Brazil we traveled
in--malaria is only present in the Amazon basin and we were mostly in
Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro states in the eastern part of the
country (a good ways south of the Amazon basin).

I highly recommend Brazil for anyone into natural history (like yourself).
It's an interesting place and relatively easy to get around in. We rented
cars and drove to all of the many parks and private nature reserves--never
had any problems although the Brazilians drive like maniacs and they don't
believe in road signs!

Merrill
