I've done a little online research and have found that Black Swallowtail
caterpillars will pupate early if they run out of food or if unfriendly temps
are coming and the resulting butterflies will be small. This would explain why
my FOY from last year was tiny. I assume this applies to other species as well.

I just checked my FOY post for a Black Swallowtail from last April. Many FOY's
are smaller than average but this one was really tiny. If I remember correctly,
it was about the size of an average Orange Sulphur.

Swallowtail I've ever seen)
