While participating in the Nickajack Christmas Bird Count on Friday, Dec. 30, we found 3 Sleepy Oranges. This was about ½ mile west of Nickajack Dam in Marion County, TN. Air temperatures had warmed to 57 F and the sun was out. All three butterflies were seen flying along a road through a brushy area composed mostly of privet, which was dense enough to block off the 5-10 MPH winds that afternoon. When they landed, their colors blended nicely with fallen leaves and they were quite hard to pick out among the leaf litter. In this same area hundreds of American Robins and Cedar Waxwings were gorging on the privet berries. Bill Haley Chattanooga, TN
