Hello everyone,
I visited Eagle Lake WMA just north of Memphis today for a couple of hours
and as I was walking along one of many mowed areas between a cornfield and a
drainage ditch, I stirred up a blue. It seemed to be flying just a bit
stronger than the typical Eastern Tailed-Blue, so I thought it might be a
Reakirt's Blue as I've seen them occasionally there. But once it landed and
I got a good look at it, I realized it was a Ceraunus Blue!!! To my
knowledge, this is a state record sighting. As you can see from the photo,
it appears to be the southwestern form, so this probably drifted up from
Texas, but it is relatively fresh, so it must have hatched nearby. According
to range maps, the normal range is several hundred miles away, so this was
quite a surprise.
