Finally was able to find a Southern Dogface that was more hungry than scared.
All photos were taken in Polk County Tennessee on July 24, 2010.

Dogfaces are regularly seen throughout Tennessee, but it seems they are almost always late on their way to be somewhere. I've found it difficult
to find one that can slow down and remain calm long enough to be photographed.

I believe this one is a male, that feels comfortable wearing a little pink, due to several subtle signs.  The tip of the forewing is a little more square than pointed.  The poodle face, showing through, is highly defined.
And the two white dots on the hindwing that are circled in burnt red are very strong and highly defined.  When in flight, the backside of those same two white marks, show up as two very defined orange circles.

This little Swarthy was present for about ten seconds before the Dogface scared it away.  It also has been seen many times in the County, but never photographed.
Where would we be without Red Clover?

Fly vs. Fly or Spy vs. Spy?

The Robberflies ate all the Skippers so now they're starting on what's left.

Gruesome.
