The Cove at Concord Park in west Knox County continues to the be a good place
to see horned grebes in Knox County. Had at least 7 of them late this morning
(Saturday) swimming and diving in very close. Not much else on the water.
Just 3 Mallards and some domesticated muscovies & geese. About 50 ring billed
gulls with at least 3 Bonapartes mixed in. Several Great Blue Herons and a
Belted Kingfisher. A flock of about 30 Cedar Waxwings in a tree across
Northshore. A Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.
I've been noticing an abundance of Northern Cardinals in my yard this winter.
I've been doing Cornell's Project Feederwatch for the past 5-6 winters and this
winter my number of cardinals has more than doubled. The previous 5 years I
was reporting 2 or 3; this year it's 6 or 7 every weekend. I wonder if it's a
trend or just something peculiar to my yard.
