A few notable sightings from the yard (west Knox Co) during this
busy and rainy weekend including some rare birds for the yard in
spring and a few new yardlist late dates. For the record, this
is our 8th spring in our house.
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 rather pale male singing and giving rather
good looks on Sat (16 May). I even got the bird in the scope and
was setting up to digiscope him when a Red-eyed Vireo chased him
away. I've had several in the fall but this was my first spring
Philly for the yardlist.
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, 1 singing Sun evening (17 May) and again Mon
morning when he was joined by 1 or 2 singing Swainson's Thrushes
and a calling VEERY (new late date). Like the Phillies, Gray-cheeks
are rather common in the fall when both (and everybody else) show
up to eat Blackgum fruit but this was only my second spring Gray-
cheeked Thrush in the yard ... the first was earlier this spring.
The only warblers were Blackpolls with squeeky wheels until Mon
morning when single male Blackburnian and Yellow Warblers showed
up... both setting new late dates for the yardlist. Also had a
Blackpoll in the parking lot at work on Mon morning (also west
Knox Co).
