Radnor Lake
Davidson Co.
Some additional waterfowl species have moved in to Radnor since I reported
on Sunday. Today there were 5 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 female Canvasback, 2
Wigeons, 39 Gadwalls, 8 Wood Ducks, 3 Pied-billed Grebes, and several Canada
Geese.
others of interest:
killdeer 1
black-throated green 2
yellow-rumped 100+
common yellowthroat 2
eastern phoebe 2
cedar waxwing 10
ruby-crowned kinglet 2
golden-crowned kinglet 3
white-throated sparrow 5
Yesterday, David Hawkins and I had a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak at Radnor
which acted very strangely. We were standing on the spillway bridge and it
flew very low over the lake and picked off something from the water. Then
flew very weakly below the bridge and landed in the dense brush on the side of
the spillway. Finally, it flew again just a foot off the ground and landing
in the short grass at the base of a willow. It stayed there hidden in the
grass for quite a while. I've never seen one catch anything off the water
before, and they're not usually ground birds. Its weak flight made us think
there was something wrong with it.
We also got to look DOWN on a Golden-crowned Kinglet that had just bathed in
the spillway pool and then perched in a brush pile to preen, seeing its crown
in all its glory. Nice!
Yesterday I had 2 Great Horned Owls calling just outside my house at 7:00
a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
