I covered Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in east Knox Co (among
other places) for the Knox County Fall Count today (Sunday,
28 Sept 2008). A great day for warblers everywhere I went
today, especially 7 Islands where I probably had more warblers
today than all my previous visits combined (if you don't count
the hoardes of C Yellowthroats that nest there) 79 warblers
of 16 species including ORANGE-CROWNED plus 5 vireo species
including WARBLING and PHILADELPHIA. And yet not a single
Canada Goose, Mallard, or Wood Duck.
The best birding was along the Steamboat Island Trail but
also had good warbler waves in the parking lot, along the
fence row on the Overlook Trail, and in the pines along the
road at the Homestead Trail. Basically anywhere there were
Hackberry trees... which narrowly beats out Black Gums as my
favorite fall bird tree. Both the Warbling and Philadelphia
Vireo were eating Hackberries... although I've also had both
species eating Black Gum berries in our backyard.
Also had a LEAST FLYCATCHER on the Steamboat Island Trail
at 7 Islands, seen well (eyering, wing extension, dusky tip
to underside of bill) and heard calling. A very rare treat
for this count.
Anyway, a modest 76 species on the day for me, missed a lot
of raptors and waterfowl but 18 warblers and 5 vireos helped.
