There is a small heron rookery at the end of the swamp just west of me. It
isn't easy to see from the field road, but I can hear it and glimpse the
birds coming and going. I also see vultures in the trees near the rookery.
When I lived near Pine Lake just below Lexington, there was a rookery at
the shallow south end, where Stegall Road crossed. There were also vultures
in the trees there. Do these birds sometimes nest near each other, or
should I assume the buzzards are there for other reasons, such as dead
chicks, or scraps from heron meals? I confess, I did not notice whether the
vultures were black or turkey, which may be a clue, since they have
different nesting habits...
Thanks for any thoughts or observations on this question.
