[TN-Bird] unusual quail call

While out with the dogs on this misty early morn, I heard a sort of mewling
coming from the soybeans. I stopped and listened closely, and it was
clearly just under the soybean canopy maybe just fifteen feet from where I
stood. I couldn't tell if it were puppy, rat, or some other furry critter,
but it definitely had a mammalian quality. I was finally tempted to step
into the waist high beans and approach the sound. A quail exploded up and
away in a shower of dew!

I have heard the soft clucking and chirping of quail, as they covey, but I
have never heard this sound from one before. Has anyone else experienced
this, or was there something else in the beans that I never was able to
see?

This was on Island Road in the most northerly tip of Chester County...
