[TN-Bird] ucr rare bird alert

Dear birder in the UCR,
 
Yesterday I learned that two adult, leg-marked Whooping Cranes have been
present at the Grassland Unit of the UT Experimental Ag Station on Ted
Davis Rd. in Cumberland Co., TN, since last Saturday.  The birds are
apparently not roosting at this site, but they show up there in the
early A.M. (by 0730 CDT usually) and forage in the fields there all day
before departing for an unknown roost site in the late P.M.  I went to
this site this morning and saw the cranes.  With each passing day the
likeliood that these cranes will continue their migration north
increases, but I would say that there is a fairly good chance that they
will still be present at this site this afternoon and probably tomorrow.
 
If you try to see the cranes, please make absolutely no attempt to cross
any fences and go onto the ag station property, but stay on Ted Davis
Rd. to do your viewing; remember that the recommended minimum distance
for viewing any wild Whooping Crane during migration is 600 feet. If the
cranes are present, you can get good looks at them with a scope from Ted
Davis Rd.
 
To get to this site, go to Crossville on I-40.  Whether you are coming
from the east or west, look for Alternate Rt. 127, which forms a
semicircle around the southwestern edge of Crossville and take it until
it intersects with Rt. 101 (Miller Rd.); take Rt. 101 south about 3
miles to Rt. 282 (Dunbar Rd.) on the left and then follow Dunbar south
about 4 miles to Ted Davis Rd. on the right. Once you are on Ted Davis
Rd., immediately begin scanning the fields on the far left for the
cranes; if you do not see them within a quarter mile, then you have
missed them or they have departed.
