A report made today of a Short-eared Owl found in Nelson Co., KY,
recently reminded me to mention that a Short-eared Owl was found injured
in Smith Co., TN, 15 Oct. 2006, by far the earliest during fall ever
recorded in the Upper Cumberland Region of KY and TN. If the rodent
population to the north is low, it may be we will have a good winter for
this owl, to go along with a fairly good one last winter.
I checked the Heritage Marsh in White Co. for birds Sat. morning; had 5
Sedge Wrens and a Grasshopper Sparrow there, along with latish
Blackburnian Warbler and Blue Grosbeak.
Winston Walden and I birded Jackson Co. Sunday, finding not too much
besides a Cattle Egret, the first record of that ardeid in that county
that I know about. A Lincoln's Sparrow added a little interest to the
day's otherwise slow character.
