Two nights ago while on an unsuccessful owling expedition, we noticed a pond at
the new Murfreesboro Walmart which appeared to have some suitable shorebird
habitat. Sure enough, after the thunderstorms today, 5 White-rumped Sanpipers
and 4 Semipalmated Sandpipers dropped in. The pond is completely fenced and
can be accessed off US Hwy 70, aka John Bragg Highway, aka the new Woodbury
Hwy, or from the Walmart parking lot which is at the corner of US70 and
Rutherford Boulevard. The birds seemed to haved moved on later this afternoon,
but anytime one is in the area, the pond might be worth checking, which can be
accomplished in reality without even getting out of the vehicle! There is such
a dearth of shorebird habitat in the area that anything passing through might
be tempted to set down. There is also another pond farther south at the far
end of the Walmart parking area that could also be good.
